This time of year seems to be an obvious and expected time of change. The fall season is officially here, and more cool, crisp mornings are on the way. Before we know it, the color of the beautiful fall leaves will surround us as the harvest season begins. It almost sounds cliché to talk about, and not overly miraculous, as it happens every year. Yet I am one of those people who enters fall with the most excitement and wonder. I can’t get enough of the cool, crisp mornings, watching leaves change color, the shift from sandals and t-shirts to warm boots, sweaters, and scarves, and I adore that pumpkin everything is everywhere. I happily welcome this seasonal change. But I can’t say that I welcome every one of life’s changes with as much excitement.
Perhaps, like me, you’ve found yourself in a situation outside of your comfort zone lately. Maybe you’ve recently changed jobs, volunteered in a new group, or had people in your life come and go. Maybe you’ve had days you just wonder why things can’t run smoothly, the chores and activities aren’t getting done like you want them to, and know something has to change but you aren’t ready to try anything new. As much as we can thrive on a routine, remembering that change is a necessary and constant aspect of our lives that can lead to positive outcomes is comforting.
Even more comforting is knowing that God is with us every step of the way. God is there so we can face the challenges that change may bring. Malachi 3:6 says “For I am the Lord, I change not.” While remembering God’s steady support in our lives and hearts, may we have the courage to face each day, each change, each unexpected and expected surprise, with confidence and excitement. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to stop and take a break for a pumpkin spice latte, pumpkin muffin, or whatever you may choose. While you are enjoying your treat, take the time to remember God’s constant presence and unchanging support in your life.
