In 2016, more than 2,000 households registered with Barnabas. Because families register through a head of household it’s difficult for us to track how many utilize the store every month. However, it’s safe to estimate that hundreds, if not thousands of people benefit from Barnabas Community. In the last year, we have seen significant growth in our Thursday mornings, from an average of about 35 households to 55-60 households visiting every Thursday.
Many of our guests utilize our food ministry regularly and plan their meals around our meal distribution on Saturdays. Each month, we distribute an average of 4,500 – 5,000 articles of clothing, as well as hundreds of books, toys, and household goods.
Many of our guests are the working poor, disabled, homeless, struggling with mental illness, or they are new immigrants to the US after being displaced by war or political oppression. Some come to Barnabas looking for nicer clothing to wear to an interview, family gathering or new job where they were just hired. Many who work in the meat packing or food industry come to Barnabas to look for clothes that keep them warm as they work in refrigerator temps every day.
Barnabas Community Center is a merciful place for people who need a break from the stress of life. Many guests come to sit together, have coffee and refreshments and to simply be someplace that is safe and comfortable.
