On my walk around the section tonight I felt the Spirit move me to check out the neighbor’s new calves. I was particularly taken by the one on the left.
Many years ago, when I sensed my first call was ending, I showed up at the farm Jerry and Joann, two gracious hosts who allowed me to help them with their morning chores. Actually, I did way more watching than helping. They had dairy cows as part of their farm, so I experienced morning milking and I watched and learned so much. I remember Jerry saying that “cows are a lot like people. They each have their own personality. Some come just like their supposed to. Others, you have to kind of fight with to get ’em to do what they’re supposed to do.” After he said that, I saw that he was right. The cows came in their own order and some willingly and others… not so much.
This calf on my walk tonight really got me thinking. I’m not sure what personality he (she?) was born with. I also do not know what will shape this calf’s personality over time. But I figure that being born with marked with a heart on your forehead has to be a pretty good omen!
That’s when the Holy Spirit started working on me. Do people see an expression of love when they look at me? I’m not a big one for “wearing my heart on my sleeve,” but I do believe it is part of our Christian duty to be the means by which God’s love is known.
So I felt challenged to work harder on making God’s heart be seen on me. This week I will try to communicate love as best I can – sincerely hoping that when people see me, they see God’s love displayed. How about you? Care to join me?
