God Sighting: The Lasting Effect of the ELCA Youth Gathering
Sheridan has 28 young people and seven caring adult leaders preparing and raising money to participate with the 30,000 people heading to Houston this summer as a part of the ELCA Youth Gathering. Speakers and artists are being announced as we draw closer to the event.
Sheridan has a long history of participating in this denominational faith formation event and two of our young adults recently reflected on their varied experiences with the Gathering. While these young adults won’t travel to Houston this summer, they have been involved with the youth ministry by helping to lead youth group each Wednesday night.
Alex Henning, a 2009 Gathering youth participant in New Orleans and 2015 adult participant in Detroit explains a service learning experience, “It was important for us to serve the community and I’m glad I was given this opportunity to make a positive difference and embody the light of Christ. But it was when the people we were serving started to join in the work when it became a truly sacred moment, rich in God’s grace and love. We were able to love deeply, grow spiritually and share abundantly through this life changing experience.”
Lauren Hestermann, 2009 & 2012 Gathering youth participant in New Orleans and 2015 adult participant in Detroit adds; “The place I felt closest to God was during the worship (Mass Gathering) each evening. It is an indescribable feeling to worship with so many youth and adult leaders who all have the same beliefs as you and more importantly, all there to give glory to God!”
Please continue to keep our group in prayer as we prepare and journey to Houston this summer. Read more about past ELCA Youth Gathering experiences on our blog.
Easter Breakfast Thank You!
With praise and thanksgiving to God, we extend our sincere appreciation to all those who attended the Easter Breakfast, as well as the 50 youth and adult volunteers who helped prep, cook, serve, and clean-up. Your presence, hospitality, and smile helped make this Easter season especially blessed for all members and guests of Sheridan Lutheran Church. Through these efforts, over 500 were served and we received nearly $2700 through the Easter Breakfast free-will offering, bringing our total raised to nearly $13,000 in support of the 2018 Youth Trip to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, TX!
In addition, through a Thrivent Action Team, we received $250 community impact dollars to help cover some of the cost of food. Thank you for your generosity! You are a blessing to our congregation and our youth ministry program! To learn more about the ELCA Youth Gathering, visit their website. #ELCAYG2018 #WeAreAllGoing
