by Amelia Schwensen, Sheridan 2018 Youth Mission Trip participant
My favorite part of this trip (to the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering) was the service day. Going out into the community and helping others was very meaningful to me. Also, I was able to see the difference we made in people’s lives and what we could accomplish when we all worked together. I was amazed when I saw a woman with her young son playing in the fountain we had just cleaned around. She came over and thanked us, telling me how dirty it was before and how her son can play there safely now that it was clean. Her gratitude really moved me and reminded me of what we are capable of when we work together.
I encountered God in
“Her gratitude really moved me and reminded me of what we are capable of when we work together.”
I learned a lot about God’s grace and mercy. It is not just when God is a nice guy and decided to forgive us. It is something that surrounds us constantly like a sea of never-ending love. I also learned about God’s unconditional love for us and how it leads us to love others. God’s hope is also something I learned about. Our faith will always be like a light even in the darkest times of life.
About myself, I learned that for all my flaws and shortcomings, God loves me for who I am and forgives me no matter what. I know he created me for a purpose. He made me just as He wanted me, flaws, imperfections, and all. I have learned to accept myself for who I am and am trying to be more the person God wants me to be.
I would like to thank our sponsors for supporting us and helping keep it affordable for us. I would also like to thank the adult leaders for taking
When I return home, I will be myself more and not try to be someone I’m not. I will try to serve the community more through volunteering and try to be the hands and feet of God. I will try to be more patient with others and more accepting. I will take my renewed faith and grow it even more.
