Confirmed in Faith
by Pastor Michelle Oetken
For the last three years in Confirmation, we have asked 52 middle school students and 17 caring adult Small Group Leaders to share their highs, lows and God moments every week. The result is that our groups have grown closer together, faith has deepened, prayers have been uplifted and everyone has developed a lens to notice God active and present in their lives. This has truly been holy time.
At the culmination of their Confirmation experience, each confirmand is asked to write about their faith. The following are excerpts from some of their faith statements. May you find them encouraging, uplifting and may they help you to see God in our youth and in the world around you.
I believe that we, as human beings, are God’s creation, heirs to his love, his children and stewards of his creation. We are just as important to God as every star and every blade of grass. God gives us everything – every moment and every heartbeat- as a gift, regardless if we stop to give thanks or not.
I believe that our God is my best friend. God is always with me and always supports me. I believe God is my stronghold.
I would like to thank my parents, my small group leaders and Sheridan congregation. The congregation has always been a huge part of my faith journey, from my baptism, and now to me being confirmed.
God has provided me with parents who love me, a house for shelter, and food for nourishment. Whenever anyone has ever helped me, whether it’s in school, church, or sports, I feel that it is God working through them to help me.
My dad died in 2013, and I experienced God because He provided us with things to help us after he died. People were so generous to us and baked us things to help and I believe that they were sent by God.
During confirmation these past three years I have learned much about my faith. Learning the 10 Commandments and understanding these commands have helped me understand what God wants and desires for all of us. Anyone can memorize them, but learning to apply them in my daily life has helped my faith grow.
I learned that I am not alone and that God is always there with us even when we feel alone in the darkest of places.
After Confirmation, I will serve on hospitality teams, financially support Sheridan’s ministry, attend worship on the weekend and on Wednesdays. I will help at VBS, at camp “Up, In, Out,” on mission trips and I will attend youth group. I will help at Barnabas.
The list goes on and on.
Thank you for praying for these fantastic Confirmands.
