Sheridan’s confirmation ministry is a faith formation program for 6th-8th grade students that helps young people to learn, serve and grow an active faith in Jesus Christ. In the spring of 8th grade, confirmation students have the opportunity to affirm their baptismal vows in the service of Affirmation of Baptism. This worship service is an important event when young adults publicly say “yes” to what they have learned about faith, Christ, and God’s relevance to their life. After the Affirmation of Baptism service, the students are considered adult voting members of the church with full rights and responsibilities.
This three-year educational ministry of the church meets for classes September through the end of April as a part of the Wednesdays @ the Well midweek ministry. Confirmation helps baptized youth to identify more deeply with the Christian community through Word and Sacrament and to participate more fully in its mission.
When a child is baptized, parents and sponsors make a promise to the child and to God… “to bring them to the services of God’s house, and teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Ten Commandments. As they grow in years…place in their hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for their instruction in the Christian faith…” Sheridan Lutheran Church seeks to support parents in fulfilling that very important promise through worship and education.
Sheridan’s Confirmation Ministry involves 6th, 7th and 8th graders and helps them to learn more about the Bible, Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, along with other Christian beliefs and traditions. Confirmation students are also expected to participate in service events, fellowship activities, worship and a yearly retreat. As a part of this ministry, students are grouped with 5-8 peers and an adult guide in a small group.
This ministry uses two different formats for our teaching time – core classes and elective classes.
Core classes use both large group and grade level small group teaching styles. Small groups are led by a caring, committed adult leader and with 5-8 other young people in their grade.
Elective classes are classes the student, as an individual, chooses to attend. Each student has a variety of class options to choose from and needs to select their elective classes on the yearly ministry registration form. More information about the specific class offerings can be found in the course guide.
A yearly retreat is required for all students, and therefore the fee is included in the yearly registration fee. An overnight retreat in the fall at Carol Joy Holling Camp is the preferred retreat, with alternative retreat options available.
