Women’s Devotion: Be Still

Already worried about the effect of technology on children, the beginning of the series Re-wired made me uncomfortable and fearful for my grandchildren’s future. At three, my grandson, holding his iPad, said, “Grandma, I need some WiFi.” Another time he remarked, “You don’t have a TV in your car. What will I watch?” His love for and possible overuse of his iPad and other technology sent me into grandma panic.

As the series progressed, I had the privilege of spending time with my grandchildren. I found it deeply rewarding to go on a nature walk to the city park and see them discover the wonders of the outdoors. My granddaughter admired the beauty of the trail, where the trees form an arch over the path. We paused to examine leaves, bugs, and sticks along the way. I was especially comforted when my technology-loving grandson played with a classmate at the park. That week, we enjoyed time together, both inside and outside, without anyone watching TV, using a phone, or playing on an iPad.

By the end of the series, I felt calmer and more confident that my grandchildren could thrive despite the growing presence of technology. While the risks may escalate as they grow older, their strong family ties and faith give me hope. They are blessed to live in a neighborhood with many children who still play together. I trust that their family and community will help keep them engaged and grounded in the real world.

It’s not just the young who are at risk, though. I’m guilty of using my phone while waiting, “watching TV,” and for entertainment. As devices continue to intrude into my life, I want to be more mindful and intentional about balancing technology and personal interaction.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” (KJV)

I love how Pastor Michelle began with “Be still and know that I am God” and slowly removed the final words until just “Be” was left. I have adopted this as a new spiritual practice.

Lord, I pray you will help me focus as I reflect on these words:

Be still and know that I am God
Be still and know that I am
Be still and know
Be still
Be
Amen.
