Women’s Devotion: Lent is a Journey

Lent, like life, is a journey. We follow Jesus’ sandaled feet as they press into the dusty road toward Jerusalem. This season invites us to reflect on our own paths—the shadowed valleys, the sunlit peaks, and the unexpected turns that shape our stories.

Growing up at Sheridan in the ‘90s, I discovered leadership. Serving as the youth representative on Pastor Greg’s call committee, I never imagined that my journey would one day bring me full circle.

At 22, I set off on an adventure in ministry and missions, traveling as far as Indonesia and the Dominican Republic and as close as rocking my three babies to sleep in Wisconsin, Missouri, and Nebraska. But life’s road isn’t always smooth, and mine soon began a steep and unexpected descent.

In 2020, during the pandemic, my world abruptly shifted. Divorce, single parenthood, and the long road to emotional healing became my new reality. I felt lost, whispering prayers of uncertainty: God, this isn’t where I wanted to go. Yet, even in unfamiliar territory, the sturdy guideposts of faith remained.

When I moved back to Lincoln in the fall of 2023, searching for the next step in both my career and faith, I found myself returning home to Sheridan. An unexpected intersection brought me back into conversation with Pastor Greg. Through much prayer and discernment, I joined Sheridan’s staff in mid-January—a blessing for which I am deeply grateful.

“You have made known to me the path of life…” — Psalm 16:11

Though Jesus knew his journey would lead to the cross, he paused along the way—embracing moments of joy, sorrow, and deep connection. He knows our struggles. He understands. Yet the Father’s vision stretched beyond suffering. The road, no matter how difficult, led to resurrection.

As we enter this Lenten season, help us reflect on our own journeys and trust that you walk with us through every twist and turn. When we cannot see what lies ahead, remind us that you go before us, preparing the way.
