Devotion: Back to School
Please take a moment to read the scripture from the weekend:
Luke 2:41-52 & Matthew 28:16-20
As each new school year starts, I get excited. It’s the supplies lining stores, the rhythm of what is familiar and a chance at a fresh start. I find it as a time to look forward to what can be and how it can build on what experiences we carry with us.
However, I know that back-to-school season can be a little overwhelming, a mix of excitement and anxiety. We can often prepare our backpacks full with supplies—pencils, folders and notebooks. But what are we really carrying with us? Pastor Greg’s sermon from the weekend reminds us that we are sent out into the world as disciples. We’re called to carry not just our school supplies, but also the love and grace of God. We are all disciples, and as we go into our schools, our workplaces, and our communities, our mission is to share God’s light. Our “backpacks” are filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit—things like kindness, patience, and a servant’s heart.
This isn’t just a task, but a promise. The same Jesus who was once a questioning student in the temple is with us always, promising to be with us “to the end of the age.” So as you pack your bag in the coming days, whether literally or figuratively, know that God’s grace is one thing you can never leave behind.
Gracious God, as the rhythm of the new school year sets in, we lift up all students, teachers, and school staff. We pray for curious minds and compassionate hearts. May our backpacks be a symbol of your presence, carrying not just knowledge, but also your love and grace. Help us to be your hands and feet, sharing kindness and building up our communities. Guide us, protect us, and fill us with your peace. Amen.
