A Letter of Thanks for Barnabas Meal Ministry
COVID-19 paused our regular ministry hours at Barnabas. However, our creative team of volunteers developed a plan for take-out meals and shopping by appointment. Every Thursday and Saturday, meals are served in take out containers. For many in our Barnabas Community, this is their only hearty meal for the day. Through the generosity of the Lincoln Community Foundation, Community Health Endowment and the Thrivent Choice Dollars given to Sheridan, these meals are funded! Hooray God, City of Lincoln and Sheridan!

Most importantly, because of your ongoing gifts throughout the year, especially during Magnificent Gifts giving in December, Barnabas has a consistent presence in our community. This consistent investment that you make ensures Barnabas can stay open. Therefore, it is easy for the foundations in our city to invest in our work. Thank you!

Why would sack lunches provided by Barnabas be so important to me specifically? The neighborhood I live in isn’t convenient. There are other free meals in town, yes, but only 1 on Sundays. And that is assuming you have transportation. With no buses running at all, choices for a prepared meal are slim to none.
On paper, the distance between my neighborhood (Belmont) and the one of Matt Talbot are relatively close….However, not only myself, but many of my neighbors have physical and/or mental disabilities. Which, in terms of time and travel cannot be measured, but can add stresses to the already long walking distance.
Barnabas is a bright light. I don’t know if it was pre-planned or not, but I can say with certainty, gained from personal experience, that the volunteers there are not just there to feed you, they are there to care first and foremost. With two meals prepared weekly, it’s just not enough for those who find travel difficult. Same can be said for those of us with anxiety-related problems….not only am I hungry, now I have to try and overcome problems that earned me the title of “disabled.”
