Commentary on NBC TV series “AD”

On Easter night, April 5, NBC begins showing a new 12-week TV series called “AD:The Bible Continues.” The series is based on the book of Acts and details the events of the resurrection, the coming of the Holy Spirit and the work of the disciples in the early church. The same producers of “AD” also produced the culturally popular series “The Bible” that aired on the History Channel recently.

These shows can be very inspiring for our faith, even leading non-believers to faith in God. These shows also leave a big imprint with how we visualize Biblical stories. Just think of the original “10 Commandments” movie with Charleston Heston playing Moses. For many of us, that’s how we first really understood Moses and the Exodus from Egypt. Sometimes when watching a TV series or movie based on the Bible, the question of “Did that really happen?” arises. Oftentimes, artistic license is taken to keep the visual story unfolding, captivating the viewer. However, artistic license is not always completely accurate to the Biblical account.

During this series, the pastoral leadership of Sheridan will be offering commentary on the show following each week’s episode. The goal for these commentaries is to invite further discussion, critical thinking, and explain where the writers maybe took some artistic license. We will have the commentary posted by mid-week following the Sunday viewing.
