Devotion: Amazed

Gripping the bottom of his shirt, my six-year old nephew watched in amazement as my brother threw rocks into the small pond near their house. “WHOA Dad!” he exclaimed in shear joy. Rock after rock went in creating endless ripples. Small rocks, large rocks, skipping rocks and even pine-cones…. each throw was a new experience and Logan’s amazement never waned.

That day my nephew’s wonder was alive and contagious. Witnessing this through a child, I was reminded of God’s magnificence all around us and how little I stop to notice it, let alone, be in awe of it.

I know I’m not alone in this observation. In our technology driven, fast-paced world, it sometimes seems that we’ve lost our ability to be amazed. How often do we take time to appreciate the intricate veins in a tree leaf or the vastness of the sky? Instead, we spend more time looking at a screen than witnessing the world in front of us. This is why we are given verses such as this one from Deuteronomy, which reminds us to praise God for the incredible world he has created for us, rather than take it for granted.

Deuteronomy 10:21: He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the opportunities You’ve given me to be amazed. Please help me to have times when I can be child-like and marvel at Your mighty works, and be amazed at the God you are. Amen.
