Devotion: Anxiety and Fear

Devo_082224

Please take a moment to read Matthew 18:1-6.

Ahmad Hariri, Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University writes, “Change has occurred so rapidly for our species that now we are equipped with brains that are super sensitive.” He also writes that because . . . “Americans don’t have many real threats for their survival, that their brains express fear in maladaptive ways.” Pastor Greg shared some statistics this past weekend.

My brain harbors useless ways to create anxiety. As a child, my mother woke my brothers and me each morning to reprimand us for something we may or may not have done the day before. Waking up each morning filled me with such dread. It is time to forgive myself for any mistake I may make during the day. Secondly, I love to read news from around the world. But now, my newsfeeds are filled with horrible stories. I find myself worrying about our country and humankind. It is time for me to turn off the news!

The philosopher Epicurus stated, “Men (humans) are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them.” What can we do when we feel anxious or fear the world outside our homes? Identify the concepts that frighten us. Rejection, failure, our crazy world? Then trust that we have made good decisions in the past and have learned to manage situations. If we do make a mistake, we can change it. Also, take purposeful action rather than simply reacting to events. Don’t suffer about something that hasn’t even happened.

Build up your self-esteem and like yourself – which may be difficult. Forgive mistakes made by others and yourself. Become involved in activities – practical or emotional skills – that create happy feelings and fortify your spirit. Find people who build up your sense of self and importance. Most importantly, build up your faith in God. Psalm 56:3 says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

Lastly, (and this one is especially difficult for me) avoid those activities or people who make you feel inadequate, unworthy, or unsafe. Go out into the world and live a life free of doubt and fear. Rest in Isaiah 41:13, “For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

Let us pray: Lord, help us to wake each day with a mind and spirit filled with joy and void of fear. Guide our daily activities so that we see the wonders of our world. Strengthen our brains and hearts to face the troubles around us with a discerning mind and a strong spirit. In the name of Jesus, Our Christ. Amen
