Devotion: Character – Remember Who(se) You Are

Nativity

Take a moment to read the scripture from the weekend: Psalm 85:1-2; 10-13 & Luke 3:7-18

Whenever my siblings and I left the house as a teenager, evening or on a trip, my dad would shout after us to, “Remember who you are”. When our friends heard this, they would ask “What does he mean, don’t you know who you are?” The beauty of the situation was that we did know who we were. Whether at that moment our identity was “band member”, “friend”, “student”, or “employee”, we also had a very important basic identity. We knew we represented not only ourselves but also our immediate family and were also important members of God’s family. Being a member of these families carries both responsibilities and benefits. We knew who we were accountable to, and I know that kept me from doing a thing or two that I shouldn’t have even thought about doing. We also knew what God asks of us, as today’s scripture tells us, be generous, kind, fair, and walk hand-in-hand with our Lord. We also always, always, always knew that we were loved and that we belonged.

Whatever other roles I may identify as, I am always first and foremost a child of God, with all the responsibilities and the wonderful benefits of grace that come with it.

Lord, thank you for laying clear the way that you would have your children live in the world. Thank you for the sense of identity, belonging, and love I received as a member of my childhood family, my immediate family, and your family. As members of your family, we pray that we live out our lives in your service and produce good fruit. Amen
