Devotion: Faithful Work
Please take a moment to read Ephesians 2:10-22.
Our lesson today reminds us that we, as Gentiles, were once heathens. Wrap your head around that! As long time members of Sheridan, we were once a part of a couple’s group called “Christian Friends”. If we talked about our group with others outside that group, the joke was, “What are we, your heathen friends?!” That was usually followed by laughter, but today’s scripture reminds us that the joke is on us! Paul wants us to remember what has transpired through Christ’s death. We are no longer foreigners, aliens or heathens, but fellow citizens with God’s people. In his letter, Paul is welcoming us to be one body to join in the work ahead of us and to strive for peace.
So now that we are reconciled to God, what do we do? We work! There are so many ways to show our love and peace in this world. We are citizens of God’s country and we strive to be faithful by doing His calling. At Sheridan, there are so many opportunities to use our talents daily. This week the Wednesday faithful joined together to create meals for the world, by the thousands! Last week, Lutheran World Relief received our love through layette and school kits. An amazing group of quilters are nearing 200 quilts to share with the world. Closer to home, a compassionate band of volunteers comfort those in hospitals or care facilities. Our Faith Formation classes reach those who seek to learn more about God. I could go on and on, but check the website for even more ways to work for the Lord.
As the Outreach Center nears completion, I am excited to see what possibilities are in store for our congregation. What can we do to continue our faithful work in our community and the world?
O, Lord, thank you for the many blessings you have given us. Open our eyes, ears, and hearts to the needs of this world. Let us be filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit as we do Your calling. AMEN

Cindy and her husband, Ray, have been members of Sheridan Lutheran Church since 1978. They have three sons, Ben, Andrew and Patrick who were confirmed at Sheridan. They enjoy spending time with their grandchildren who range in age from 8-13 with newborn twins. Cindy retired from teaching writing to middle schoolers for Lincoln Public Schools in 2014.
