Devotion: Generating Greatness – Serving

But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.  Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord. Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.”  Jeremiah 1:7-9

On any given day, I can open my news feeds and read about a person or community in need. Compassion mixed with an obsession to get rid of clutter, allows me to give easily to some of those needs. But occasionally, I read something and think, “I could give $10 to that, but it couldn’t possibly make that much of a difference.” Or, “I could volunteer for that event, but then the next time they need something they will call me again.” Or, “I have a couch they could have, but I don’t have any way to get it to them.” Or, “I could help out with that, but someone else can do it better than me.”

More than once I have thought, “I could help them, but…(insert excuse here).” And that’s just what all these scenarios have in common… excuses.

In this week’s scripture, Jeremiah had an excuse too, “I don’t know how to speak. I am too young.” But God reminded Jeremiah not to fret about the details because He would take care of it. He said, “Do not worry…I have put my words in your mouth.”

When I feel the Spirit tugging on my heart, I need to remember that I am a part of God’s plan even when if I’m not sure how, and even if I can’t see the final results. God isn’t calling me to come up with excuses. He’s calling me to be His hands and feet to serve.
