Devotion: God’s Wisdom
Please read the scriptures from the weekend: Psalm 25:1-10 & Luke 21:25-28, 34-38
When I began to think about this week’s scripture, I focused more on the beginning of Advent and all the “busyness” this season entails. I was still reeling from the planning and obligations this time of year brings to our busy lives, on top of the anguish in the world. I find myself asking God, “Is this the times spoken of in Scripture?” So much of life now seems to be portraying the things told us through the words of this week’s scripture. I feel constantly tested on how much I can take… and then I heard Pastor Greg’s message… and slipped into another mode. One I felt God was quieting my heart to hear.
As he spoke about traffic especially, I began to see in my thoughts the times I have watched as I drove (in four-lane traffic), someone behind me becoming impatient with my speed, changing lanes to go around me and “gun their motors” to speed around me. This is not only men but women with the same mentality. Not only are we unable to be “behind someone,” but we need to “be ahead of” someone. Pastor Greg spoke of the age of entitlement. And I’ve seen this ring true with people who like to comment about what they have done or how much in life they have accumulated. A dear friend relayed something her mother told her. “You have never seen a U-Haul following a hearse.”
But the important issue was coming. The importance and even the wonder and joy of the wait. This season is truly about “the wait”. “Joyful anticipation” of this time. This time of year is full of joyful anticipation of the things we’ve always done (like baking cookies with grandchildren) and the new experiences like the beauty of each Christmas and the anticipation of Heaven and our future home with our Savior. Remember He loves us so much and knows us so well, that Heaven will be different for each and every one of us (for me there will be lots of dogs and more cake than I can imagine).
One thought stood out for me this week. It’s not about God’s wisdom for we know God’s infinite wisdom and peace “that surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7). It’s about our trust in His wisdom that He is coming back. Our Savior and Lord is with us as we celebrate His birth again.
Precious God and Savior;
You have brought the light of your love for us each day. Help us to “reflect” that light to bring glory of your name to others, to bring glory to you. And let Jesus be seen in each of us today. Amen!
