How the Gospel Works

Please take the time to read Matthew 16:24-28

“I don’t know what more we can do. The medical staff is doing all that can be done. All we can do now is pray.” As a Sheridan hospital visitor for many years, I’ve heard these words uttered by family and friends. I’m sure I’ve probably said something similar when worried and anxious. I remind myself to lean on God in these stressful times. Prayer should be our first response, not our last resort.

It’s our human nature to want to fix things. We think we can take care of the situation single-handedly. Self-reliance is learned at an early age. Toddlers often throw tantrums when parents prevent them from doing something for themselves. They cry out, “Me do it!”

In the modern world, we take pride in being able to handle every situation. It’s a valued trait in our society. We like people who have a “take charge” attitude, especially when there’s work to be done.

In today’s lesson, Jesus asks his friends to deny themselves and take up their cross and follow him. In other words, He’s saying “Quit trying to rely on yourself! It causes worry and anxiety. I came to die on the cross for you and carry the load, giving you life and freedom.”

It’s very hard to be on the receiving end when we are used to being independent and serving those in need. God works through others to come to our aid. He wants to deliver us from the anxiety and worry of how we will be cared for. God lovingly provides for us.

As Pastor Michelle said in her sermon last Sunday, “In Jesus there is life and freedom. He walks with us always.”

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for dying on the cross to lift the burdens that weigh me down. Release the anxiety and worry that I may find new life and freedom in you. I turn over my self-reliant nature to you asking that you redirect my life as you see fit. Each and every day show me the path of love to take. Amen
