Devotion: Joy
Joy
Please take a moment to read Philippians 4:4-9
Joy. Such a simple word, but so much power in living a life filled with joy. Paul wrote his letter to the people of Philippi to remind them that despite the trials and troubles of the time, they should “Always be full of joy in the Lord.” And then he repeats it for emphasis. The Bible uses Joy about 165 times depending on what version you are reading. How’s that for driving home a point? “Fear not” appears 365 times! Paul tells us “Don’t worry about anything”. Again repetition gives strength to words.
When I was a child in Sunday school, we sang a song, “I have the Joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart! Where? Down in my heart!” We sang it with such enthusiasm and conviction. Oh, to be a child again and have that trusting faith.
Bet you can guess what word I choose for the wall in the Worship Center! I thought if I was going to write about joy, maybe it should be my focus during this sermon series. I could use a lot more ‘Joy’ in my life right now. Maybe if I fixed my mind on Paul’s words—“what is good, right, pure, lovely, and fine, good things in others” and praise God for them, I wouldn’t dwell on all the evil I see in the news. Pastor Michelle’s definition of joy helped me see more clearly: an attitude that defies circumstances. No matter what comes at me, my attitude can defy the negative.
A few years ago, a friend to many, was fighting breast cancer. She had such an amazing, courageous attitude. Her family even had t-shirts made that said, “Choose Joy”. She lived it every day. In preparing for this devotion I Googled that phrase, 711 MILLION sites! One of the articles describes choosing joy as a habit, something you choose every day. I can do that, an intentional search for joy in all I experience during the day. Look for the joy. God is near and ready to guard my heart and mind with peace.
Dear God,
Thank you for answering my prayers. I know I ask a lot. Help me to see all the beauty in the world and give me peace. Let me be unselfish and considerate in all I do. Let me rejoice each day for all I’ve been given. And let me find ways to share my joy!
