Devotion: Keeping Promises

When I heard Pastor Greg talk about keeping promises on Sunday, I asked myself when was the last time I made a promise to someone? Maybe I don’t “pinky swear” with anyone anymore, but there are many times throughout my week where I tell someone I will do something for, or with, them. As I’ve grown up, I have learned to be careful as to what kind, and how many, promises I make. I feel bad when I have to break a lunch date with my husband or if it doesn’t work out to play a game with my child before bedtime. I don’t want to let friends down after I agreed to attend more events than I actually have the time for. Keeping promises can become overwhelming, exhausting and stressful. Obviously there are varying degrees of promises, but even if I’m not breaking a sworn promise, I want people to know they can count on me. I don’t want trust to be broken.

Fortunately, God is not like me! He never grows weary of keeping his promises. He is who he says he is and can do what he says he can do. The Bible is filled with scripture that encourages, comforts, offers hope and promises salvation. Through God’s Word we know that nothing can separate us from His love. We know that His love is so great that he sent his Son to die for us. We can be comforted in knowing that a trustworthy God has promised to be with us forever!

Gracious Father, thank you for your example. Help us to do better in keeping our promises. Thank you for sending your perfect Son to be a sacrifice for our sins so that one day we will meet you in paradise, the place you promised to generations of believers. In your precious Son’s name, Amen.
