Devotion: Passion Sunday & Holy Week
Please take a moment to read Luke 19:29-40
Passion Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week for Christians around the world. We commemorate Jesus’ triumphant march into Jerusalem where He was greeted by a large crowd of His followers waving palm branches and people shouting, “Hosanna! Hosanna!” The disciples announced his arrival in loud voices for all the miracles he had performed.
I’ve since learned that “Hosanna” in Greek is the equivalent of “help us” or “save us”. The people were calling to Jesus to deliver them from Roman oppression. They were hoping that Jesus was the mighty warrior king they’d been waiting for. Instead, Jesus chose to ride on a lowly donkey signifying that he was to be God’s humble servant who would journey to the cross for our sake.
The waving palm branches are significant to me. After researching the characteristics of the palm tree, I identified three qualities that spoke to me as a “Palm Tree Christian”:
- The palm tree grows straight up, often to new heights, looking unto the heavens. A true Christian also looks to the heavens discerning the Will of God and fulfilling that Divine Will.
- Each and every part of the palm tree from top to bottom is useful. From its cooling effects to medicinal values to construction materials, every bit is useful. We as Christians are expected to be useful in every way to our fellow people. We must feed the needy, teach, reconcile, love and be a refuge for others when they need it.
- It is impossible to graft a palm tree to another palm tree. If grafted, it will die. Each palm tree has its own unique identity. Our identity as Christians is that we are children of God and serve one Master.
So, the question becomes: Are we growing upward? Are we useful? Do we celebrate our identity as Christians?
Good and gracious God, We ask that you make us strong as the palm tree, withstanding any storm, becoming useful in your kingdom. May we find joy in the knowledge that we are your children and serve only you. Make me your servant, Lord. Amen
