In this week’s passage, the apostle Paul encourages the believers to extend a warm welcome and generous hospitality to their friend Phoebe, a key representative of the church at Cenchreae. Phoebe’s dedication to serving others had earned her commendation from Paul, much like the admiration bestowed upon Harriet Beecher Stowe for her profound impact on society through her influential work, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
Phoebe’s reputation as a helper and supporter of many, including Paul, resonates with the spirit of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s literary masterpiece. Just as Phoebe used her influence to assist others, Stowe used her pen to shed light on the injustices of slavery in America’s tumultuous history, calling people to action and compassion. There are more parallels we can identify: Phoebe and Stowe serve as remarkable examples of how one person’s dedication can bring about positive change and inspire others to do the same.
Hospitality, as emphasized by Paul in his message to the Romans, extends beyond providing physical comfort. It encompasses an attitude of openness, kindness, and acceptance towards others, irrespective of their background or circumstances. Phoebe’s hospitality extended beyond mere actions; it embraced an attitude of genuine care and concern for those she encountered. We also see in Stowe’s life, her impactful writing illuminated the realities faced by enslaved individuals, prompting readers to examine their own hearts and take a stand against injustice.
Phoebe’s hospitality and Stowe’s advocacy remind us that the transformative power of living out our faith boldly and compassionately makes a difference. We are called to extend hospitality to those around us, recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every individual. Furthermore, we are called to advocate for justice, speaking out against oppression and working towards a society that reflects God’s all-encompassing love and grace-filled equality.
As we reflect on the change-agents that were Phoebe and Stowe, let us be inspired by their unwavering commitment to make a difference. These women show us, regardless of what we’re doing day to day, all acts matter. Let us allow these examples to be the embodiment of how we can imprint faith-led actions to advance both generosity and advocacy. May we follow the example of Phoebe’s hospitality, showing others authentic support and empowerment, and follow Stowe’s advocacy, using our voice and influence to challenge systemic injustices that hinder the flourishing of all people.
God, we thank you for the examples of Phoebe and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Help us to embody their spirit of hospitality and advocacy in our lives. Grant us discernment to recognize and resist falsehoods that seek to undermine your truth. Strengthen us to be instruments of change to advance justice and equality. Amen.
