Devotion: Reclaiming Our Minds

Please take the time to read Proverbs 2:1-11

“I think I’ve lost my mind!” Words exclaimed when we are exasperated by a bad decision or choice. I know that I’ve said it a few times out of frustration and you may have, too. 

Our sermon series titled “Pay Attention” has challenged us to be aware of what we give our attention to. It is our most valuable asset and yet we give it little notice in our daily lives. 

Last Sunday Pastor Sarah preached from Proverbs 2:1-11. Solomon writes of the moral benefits of wisdom from God himself. He speaks of God’s wisdom which is a God-given gift and the source for understanding. We gain wisdom through a constant process of growing. We trust and honor God, we study His word, we avoid bad decisions and pitfalls, and learn from our errors and recover. We sit with Jesus and allow Him to direct our lives as we pay attention and reclaim our minds. 

Years ago, my three-year-old son brought me to my knees. He had something important to tell me but I continued preparing dinner and half listened. He cupped his little hands on my face, turned my head, and said, “Mommy, look at me!” 

Every Sunday in this worship series we have been sing an offertory hymn: 

Turn your eyes upon Jesus 

Look full, in his wonderful face 

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim 

In the light of his glory and grace. 

May we turn our eyes upon Jesus and give him our full attention. 

Good and gracious God, 

Forgive me when I have turned my eyes away from you to worldly distractions. Develop self discipline in me that I may sit quietly and place my attention on you. Bless me with your wisdom and understanding as I seek your guidance for life’s decisions and godly living. Amen.
