Devotion: Symbols of Fearlessness
Please take a moment to read Mark 8:31-38
How do you become fearless when the whole world seems to be shaking in their shoes? The disciples must have been so fearful when Jesus was declaring all the awful things that would be happening to Him. Peter tells Jesus not to be saying these things, but Jesus is quick to rebuke him.
Fear is an all-consuming fact in our lives. I found a few symbols of fearlessness- the lion, eagle, and bear all represent power and fierceness, an oak tree for its strength and deep roots, the lotus for rising above its muddy and murky setting to a pristine, resilient flower. Of course, there is the color red, not just in Nebraska, but for the blood shed through courage and sacrifice. As with any country, our flag represent a whole history of struggles. We look to it with pride and a hope it will continue to flourish.
Another great example of fearlessness is found in the videos shared from Vacation Bible School this past week. These students’ faces showed the wonderful meaning of trying something new and challenging. At first they may have been timid but then they had faith to give it a go! The smiles were contagious!
How did the disciples become fearless? Jesus told them to shoulder the cross, put aside their pleasures and follow Him closely. No easy task, but they did it! The church has grown on the shoulders of these disciples. And it continues to grow on our shoulders. We have Jesus by our side every day, in scripture and in spirit.
Lord, give us courage to face an uncertain future. We will live it fearlessly knowing You are with us. Amen
