Extravagant

Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. Luke 1:57-58

Today I looked up the official definition of “extravagant” and was a little dejected. It said: Very extreme or impressive but not reasonable or practical; Exceeding reasonable bounds. To me, the word extravagant means giving more, loving more and forgiving more than you ever thought possible. As I come into the final stretch of celebrating the greatest birthday of all time, and my favorite story of the Bible, I envision extravagant moments with my family. I would certainly not define these moments as “impressive, but not reasonable.”

Is it unreasonable to expect that gratitude will flow from my children’s mouths after they receive a few simple gifts that don’t include the most valued item on their wish list? Is it extreme to stay calm as everyone picks out their perfect outfit, spends three times the normal time in front of a mirror and almost break into a brawl as we try to get that perfect family picture before heading off to church? I think some extravagance would be expected in those situations, therefore I’m sticking with my own definition of the word. I think it’s impressive and reasonable and fits with the reason for the season.

This week, look for situations where you can be extravagant to the people that are in your life. Be encouraged that the One who exceeds all reasonable bounds walks with you.

Gracious Father,
Thank you for the most precious Gift of all. Help place moments of peace, hope and love into our celebrations. Give joy and grace where there is chaos and unmet expectations. Guide us to that silent and holy night, where all is calm and all is bright, and the only thing that matters is a tiny baby made out of Your Extravagant Love.
