Feasting & Fasting

FastingFeasting

In previous years, my Lenten practices were focused around something to give up.  I often felt compelled to give up chocolate or sugar, as they were both go-to vices of mine.  I would use this practice as a way to remind myself of all that Christ had given up for me. This often resulted in added guilt.

Traditionally, a Feast such as Easter would have been preceded by a Fast.  One of the goals of the fast is to reveal habits or mindsets that may be preventing us from experiencing the joy, freedom and wholeness of the feast. Making a choice to refrain from something can increase our longing and nurture a sense of gratitude for the gift.

We can fast in many ways.  I’m striving to simplify my life, filtering down to what is essential. I’m striving for fewer distractions and more quality, less running, more quiet.  As I look at my time, I am seeking to distill down to the necessary elements. With prayer, it is becoming clear to me the parts that are simply garbage and noise.

I’m striving for time in quiet prayer and the Word, being at home with my husband and daughters, home cooked meals, time with dear friends, snuggling with my puppies and long walks. Time slows down and muscles relax.

My prayer for each of you is to seek out and grasp the Sacred in this Holy Season. When you find it, protect it and nurture it.  May God bless you as you pursue Him.  May this time of Holy Longing increase your hunger for the Celebration of our coming Easter Feast. Amen.

This devotion was written by Patty Forsberg one of Sheridan’s Women’s Ministry Team members, as a way to bring encouragement to the hearts and minds of our sisters in Christ to KNOW, LOVE and SERVE God.
