God Sighting: Café Connection to Lincoln Public Schools

With your generous financial support, through purchasing drinks at Sheridan’s Connections Café, the Homeless Outreach Program has been able to serve a wide variety of needs.

Every year, Lincoln Public Schools works to service homeless and at-risk families throughout the district. In the 2016-2017 school year, Homeless Outreach served 335 students through advocacy, educational equity support, transportation, enrollment assistance, meal services and rent and utility assistance. In 2017-2018, these numbers have increased, with 311 students identified by February and counting. With 42,000 students in the district and 46% living in poverty, the Homeless Outreach Program serves an average of 500 students and their families every year.

Families and students at LPS have a wide variety of needs. Their stories are unique and challenging. For many families, disclosing that they are newly homeless often happens at the place they find most support and comfort: at school.

Steven, a high school student, has been homeless for two years. His parents struggled with substance abuse and left Steven to fend for himself with just two years until graduation. With the help of a local agency, he was accepted into a transitional housing program that allowed him to be independent, find a part-time job and continue his education. This year, Steven is on track to graduate and plans to attend a local community college. As part of a scholarship program, he is able to live on campus however he did not have the funds to furnish his new dorm room. With the help of your funds, Steven was able to receive bedding, school supplies and an alarm clock.

Visit the Connections Cafe’ today to try one of the March specials. Your purchase at Connections Cafe’ benefits Lincoln Public School families finding permanent housing. At any time during the school year, approximately 300 students and their parents are homeless. Your tips at Connections Cafe’ are also a blessing. In March, these tips benefit our partnership with Habitat Global Village. Help provide decent housing for others as you purchase your favorite specialty drink!
