Local Mission Update: BackPack Program

Some 40 percent of all children attending school in Lincoln qualify for free or reduced lunches and each year Sheridan provides more backpacks to Lincoln Public Schools than any other source. This year we again anticipate strong participation. You can make all the difference in whether we can continue to sponsor the 95 backpacks we provide for Holmes Elementary School.

It takes $200 to sponsor a backpack for the school year. A generous family has agreed to provide matching funds for our backpacks. We hope to raise $9,500 to make this possible. To support the program financially, go online: sheridanlutheran.org/online-giving

Even more, we are currently seeking many volunteers who will be willing to receive and unload the food on our campus or pack the backpacks each week. You may sign up online, sheridanlutheran.ivolunteer.com, or at the table in the Great Hall the weekend of August 9 & 10.

What we know is that this ministry is tremendously important. The backpack they receive each Friday helps provide their family with food for the weekend.
During our annual Backpack Blessing we bless the bags for the Backpack Program. Our hope is to not only fill the Backpack Program recipients with food, but with a spiritual blessing. We give because we care and because we know that God cares!

Sheridan first joined the LPS/FoodBank Backpack Program for the start of the fall 2008 semester of LPS. Last year, the Sheridan faith community faithfully provided meals to more than 95 families each week.

Sheridan’s involvement with this program is highly dependent on the generosity of Sheridan members. Thank you for your contributions.
