When a child is baptized, parents and sponsors make a promise to God and to the child … “to bring them to the services of God’s house, and teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Ten Commandments. As they grow in years…place in their hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for their instruction in the Christian faith…” Sheridan Lutheran Church seeks to support parents in fulfilling that very important promise through worship and education.
Sheridan’s Confirmation Ministry involves 6th, 7th and 8th graders and helps them to grow in faith by learning more about the Bible, Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, along with Lutheran beliefs and traditions. Confirmation students also get to participate in service events, fellowship activities, worship and a yearly retreat. As a part of this ministry, students are grouped with 5-8 peers and adult guides in a small group.
This three-year educational ministry of the church meets for classes from September through the end of April as a part of the Wednesdays @ the Well midweek ministry. Confirmation helps youth grow deeply within the Christian community through Word and Sacrament and to participate more fully in its mission.
In the spring of 8th grade, confirmation students have the opportunity to affirm their baptismal vows in the service of Affirmation of Baptism. This worship service is an important event when young adults publicly say “yes” to God’s promise in their lives. After this Affirmation of Baptism service, the confirmands are considered adult voting members of the church with full rights and responsibilities.
