W@W Worship Series: What a Friend… What, a Friend?

Navigating friendships in elementary, middle and high school is hard! Friendships shift, change and evolve - sometimes just within a few hours! Add to this, the new phenomenon of AI Chatbots and it has gotten way worse! What’s a person to do?

For generations we’ve heard the familiar phrase, “What a friend we have in Jesus.” This has always been a beautiful thought and has inspired us. But in today’s world, we have changed the nature of expectations for friendships. And the expectations we have are actually not helpful!

This fall we will learn about the qualities of being a “true friend.” Jesus models these behaviors, and so do many others in the Bible. We certainly need this lesson now more than ever.  We are so grateful that we can grow in our understanding of friendship in the church.

October 14 - Encouragement - Colossians 3:12-17

We want to be encouragers, but how do we do this while holding each other accountable?  The Apostle Paul instructs us well!  We can guide and have it not be about us.

October 21 - Loyalty - Selections from Proverbs 17-18

It can take a while to sort out who are true friends.  The easiest way is to see who deserts you in hard times.

October 28 - Sacrifice - John 15:12-17

Jesus is pretty clear about what it means to be friends.  We need to give to our friends and not get from them.  This can be hard to figure out, but once we do, it becomes clear who are our real friends.

November 4 - Accountability - Ecclesiastes 4:9-15

We live in a time when everyone wants to be affirmed.  Actually, we are living in a time when everyone wants to be affirmed all of the time!  A true friend holds us accountable, saving us from our desire to make really bad choices.  Are you willing to risk being accountable with your friends?

November 11 - Growing Together

Basing friendship on our values creates lasting friendships.  It helps us to grow together and that bonds us forever.  What is most important to you?  What do you value?  This is where to start.

November 18 - Making Good Friends - 1 John 4:16b-21

Choosing the right friends will make a bigger difference in your life than any other of your choices.  Sadly, we choose friends for the wrong reasons, using the wrong standards.  Today we hear how to choose well.

Faith Formation Opportunities

Wednesdays-@-the-Well

Sheridan Community Nights

Come together and participate in a community night that uses service learning as the focus of ways in which to equip you to love your neighbor, grow your faith and share experiences with your whole family in guided monthly events. These activities are a great way to get to know the others at Sheridan Lutheran Church, deepen your faith and connection and simply serve together.

These specifically curated service-learning nights follow the Wednesdays @ the Well evening schedule beginning with dinner, then worship, then the specialized service learning activities from 6:30-7:30pm.
