Sheridan’s confirmation ministry is a faith formation program for 6th-8th grade students that helps young people to learn, serve and grow an active faith in Jesus Christ.
This three-year educational ministry of the church meets for classes from September through the end of April as a part of the Wednesdays @ the Well midweek ministry. Confirmation helps baptized youth to identify more deeply with the Christian community through Word and Sacrament and to participate more fully in its mission.
In the spring of 8th grade, confirmation students have the opportunity to affirm their baptismal vows in the service of Affirmation of Baptism. This worship service is an important event when young adults publicly say “yes” to what they have learned about faith, Christ and God’s relevance to their life. After the Affirmation of Baptism service, the students are considered adult voting members of the church with full rights and responsibilities.
When a child is baptized, parents and sponsors make a promise to the child and to God… “to bring them to the services of God’s house, and teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Ten Commandments. As they grow in years…place in their hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for their instruction in the Christian faith…” Sheridan Lutheran Church seeks to support parents in fulfilling that very important promise through worship and education.
Sheridan’s Confirmation Ministry involves 6th, 7th and 8th graders and helps them to learn more about the Bible, Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, along with other Christian beliefs and traditions. Confirmation students are also expected to participate in service events, fellowship activities, worship and a yearly retreat. As a part of this ministry, students are grouped with 5-8 peers and an adult guide in a small group.
A yearly retreat is required for all students, and therefore the fee is included in the yearly registration fee.
An overnight retreat in the fall at Carol Joy Holling Camp is preferred, when possible.
An email is sent to all confirmation families weekly from September through April. Please sign up if you would like to receive these newsletters and are not currently receiving these.
