Old Boots

Yesterday I took a walk in my old boots. It appears that this is the last walk, as the sole fell apart.
These boots are special to me, so their demise marks an important milestone. I have traveled the world in these boots. They have carried me to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro (twice!), helped me dig a sewer tank in El Salvador, took me down the roads of Haiti and logged miles and miles on and around my acreage. They have served me so well!
Sometimes we are all taken aback by an event because it opens us up to an understanding of how far we have come. Today I look at my worn out boots and I reflect on my journey. It has been long. It has been good. I have tried to make it faithful.
In the wonderful old movie, “Jeremiah Johnson,” Robert Redford, who plays the well-traveled and beleaguered mountain man, is told by an old friend he meets on the road: “You’ve come far pilgrim.” Jeremiah answers, “It feels like far.”
Reflecting on my life and the innumerous blessings and opportunities I have had, and looking at these old boots, I can say, “It feels like far.”
How blessed am I by this amazing journey, in which I have sought faith.
