Remembering & the “C” in G

IMG_0126

Every once in a while, Rose will comment about a little old Germany woman walking on the streets.  She will say that the woman reminds her of her gross-tante (great-aunt).  Rose is half German and speaks fondly of Gross-Tante (that’s what they called her).  She was stern, but very giving.  Sometimes I will see a woman who reminds me of my mother.  She was also stern in her demeanor.

One thing we’ve noticed that is very different here in Germany is the vast number of smokers.  I had forgotten how nearly smoke-free Lincoln has become.  While indoor smoking is not allowed, it takes some getting used to entering or exiting the buildings here, when so much smoke is in the air.

All four of our parents smoked.  Rose’s dad quit.  My father moved to pipes and cigars (studies show that this is actually worse on the lungs).  Three of our four parents died prematurely.  Only Rose’s father lived into old age.  My mother’s lung cancer was torturous to watch.

Tomorrow the “Big C” Event happens at Sheridan.  I’m sad to miss it.  I always love to be inspired by those who have met the challenge of cancer with faith, regardless of the outcome.  That is what the “Big C” Event is really about… faith.

I’ll admit, I wish I could help create a cultural shift here regarding smoking.  I’ve grown quite fond of these folks and I don’t want them to go through what my mother endured.  This is especially true because they are so unchurched.

I don’t know how one can endure without faith.
