Weekend Volunteers Numbers
It Takes a Village
You have heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Did you know it also takes a small village to make worship services at Sheridan Lutheran Church happen every week? As a matter of fact, it takes the population of Exeter, Nebraska to have worship services at Sheridan for a year.
Each Weekend
Every weekend, through our four weekend worship services, we have 60 worship hospitality volunteers who greet, pass out bulletins, help with ushering/offering, serve communion and four volunteers who serve as scripture readers. There are two volunteers/staff in the nursery who care for little ones so parents can focus on worship. Speaking of little ones, we have Babies in Christ Mentors who walk with families as we celebrate baptism. We have six altar guild volunteers who set-up communion for each communion service as well as clean-up after worship ends for the morning. There are two Welcome Center volunteers who are at the “hub” in the Great Hall helping people get the information they need. Six volunteers on the Sunday coffee team make and serve coffee throughout the morning in the Family Life Center, not to mention replenish the donut holes when they get low. We have three volunteers who serve in shifts to answer the phone and field questions in the church office each Sunday morning. We are also blessed with five bus drivers who go to several houses, apartment buildings and assisted living facilities to pick up 15-18 people for two worship services every Sunday.
Music is an important element in worship and there are eight volunteers who share their gifts by singing on Praise Team or by playing an instrument…sometimes both! We have numerous volunteers in our drama ministry who add their talents to enhance worship. Not to mention that we wouldn’t be hearing anything or watching the screens without the volunteers who provide all the technical aspects of worship with sound, visuals and cameras.
Volunteer Totals
When you add them up, there are approximately 105 volunteers (about the population of Tobias, Nebraska) who share their time and talents each weekend to make Sheridan Lutheran a warm, friendly, spirit-filled worship community. When you total ALL the volunteers who serve in these ministries, it comes to 560, which is close to Exeter’s population. In addition, there are hundreds of additional volunteers for Lent, Easter and Christmas Eve services…so we’re talking a town the size of Deshler!
Get Involved
When you consider that Sheridan’s membership is approximately the size of Cozad, it takes well over ten percent of our church family to serve in some capacity to enable us to hold worship services each weekend. We have many who already give of themselves in these ministries, but we still have a space for you to serve-because it really does “take a village.”
