Women’s Devotion: Asking Questions that Matter

Parenting Adult Class

Our current worship series, Never Enough, is based on the book by Jennifer Breheny Wallace, which boasts “In a world that says you’ll never be enough, discover the freedom of knowing you matter to God.” We are getting to learn more about this during worship, as well as the opportunity to dive deeper into “Mattering” on Wednesday evenings in Adult Faith Formation classes.

One message we are learning from this is that your worth does not come from what you do or how the world sees you. It comes directly from being God’s handiwork. Psalm 139:13-14 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Our personal uniqueness matters. A takeaway that I’m reflecting on is the purposeful way that we can impact others through meaningful conversations and questions that help convey to them that they have importance and that they matter. I’ve been attending the class focused for families with young children and each class we discuss examples of ways to frame questions and communicate in ways that help convey how our children matter to us and to God.

I recently had the opportunity in a work setting to take part in a team-building activity where we had a few moments to reflect on specific questions, followed by the opportunity to share with each other. The questions were:

1) Describe your happiest moment. What event has brought you extreme joy?
2) Describe a significant event. What event had a big impact on you? You wouldn’t be the same person if this hadn’t happened.
3) What is your guaranteed success? Imagine you could achieve anything you wanted and you were guaranteed success. What would you choose?
4) What would someone say about you? What would you want someone to say about you if you weren’t there?

In our group, just these few short questions provided the opportunity to see what each of us values most, and we could uncover shared similarities or interesting topics for future conversations. This activity also provided us the opportunity to feel proud of what makes us unique and how we matter. Perhaps you’ll have a future opportunity to discuss meaningful questions like the ones above that not only help to remind you how you matter but you’ll also be sharing the gift of mattering with others.

Dear Lord, Help us to remember that our uniqueness that has been created by you is important and matters and that we are enough. Amen
