Women’s Devotion: I Give You a New Command

Jesus said, “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me. And what I told the Jews, I tell you now; Where I am going you cannot come. I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you. All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other.” (John 13:33-35)

During this busy Lenten season, I was grateful to hear Pastor Greg “summarize” Lent for us – it’s all about God telling us, and showing us, how much he loves us. Love can bring tears to our eyes in many ways. We are touched at the realization of it and the depth of it. We are also touched at the loss of it. At the Sunday, Feb. 25th sermon, this video was shared of a Father expressing love to his children in a simple but very touching way.

I found I was unexpectedly wiping tears from this illustration. I was asking myself these questions you may reflect on as well: Do we tell those we love what they mean to us? Do we show them? If we simply tell but do not show, these words ring hollow. You’ve heard “Actions speak louder than words.” Showing is good, but showing and telling is ideal.

And we aren’t just invited to love each other, but rather commanded in John 13:34. We are to love each other (through telling & showing that love) just as Christ first loved us.

Heavenly Father, help me to love others as you have commanded us in both words and deeds. Amen.
