Women’s Devotion: High Fives and Holy Habits: The Beauty of Intergenerational Faith
“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.” Psalm 145:4
When my husband and I were looking for a home church, one of the primary things that drew us to Sheridan was the commitment to intergenerational engagement. We didn’t just want a place where you simply showed up on Sundays; we wanted a community where every generation interacted with one another.
Reflecting on my own upbringing, some of the biggest “difference makers” in my faith weren’t just my peers. They were the older members who volunteered for youth group meals, served as Sunday school leaders, and—most importantly—secretly snuck us bits of candy to keep us quiet (and happy) during the service. They were the “grandparents in faith” who made the sanctuary feel like home.
Now that we have our own children, it has been a blessing to watch those same types of relationships form here at Sheridan. One of my kids’ favorite Sunday traditions is sneaking out after the children’s message to grab high fives from the early service coffee drinkers.
It is a simple gesture, but it’s profound. Watching our church family “love on” my children—and seeing my children love them right back—is a lived-out version of the Gospel. These relationships do more than just fill a social gap; they show our children that the love of God is wide, seasoned with wisdom, and accessible at every age. By fostering these connections, we aren’t just building a “friendly church”; we are teaching our children how to shine their own light back into a world that desperately needs that kind of connection.
Lord, thank you for the loving presence of all ages in our church family, showing us of your love. Amen
