Prayers and Wishes

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13

We recently celebrated our oldest granddaughter’s 7th birthday. As she was getting ready to blow out the candles, her younger brother and cousins yelled, “make a wish!” Afterward, they wanted to know what she wished for. Her reply was, “I can’t tell you or it won’t come true.”

Donโ€™t we all find ourselves making wishesโ€”whether with birthday candles, blowing dandelion seeds, or our prayers each day?

That is what God encourages us to do โ€“ come to Him in prayer. We are His children whom He dearly loves and He wants us to bring our concerns and wishes to Him. He hears those prayers and answers them in His time. We just need to learn to be patient and put our trust in Him.

Many devastating things are continually happening in our community, nation, and world. Prayers and wishes for the turmoil to end are shared by all.

Our faith in God calls us to act on those prayers and wishes. By sharing Godโ€™s love for others in caring acts of our time, talent, and treasure we will help to make those wishes of peace and healing in the world come true.

Just as our granddaughter is anticipating her wish being fulfilled, may we as Godโ€™s children use the gift of our faith, His never-ending love for us, and our love for one another to help bring healing to our world.

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your love and grace which you give to us freely. May that love for us make us stronger and more open to sharing our faith. And may our faith help to ease the struggles of those around us in whatever way we can.

This month’s devotion was written by Mary Plageman, a member of Sheridan’s Women’s Ministry Team. Mary and her husband, Ron, have been members of Sheridan since 1974. They have been married 50 years (come this August) and have two sons, Nate and Brendan. They also have four wonderful grandchildren, Cora (7yrs), Owen (6yrs), Damon (4yrs) and Vera (3 years).

She retired from teaching first grade in 2011 and now loves to travel, read great books, spend time with the grandkids, enjoy time with family and friends, and wonder how she got everything done before! Mary and Ron love Sheridan and all the wonderful people who are their special extended family!
